Spring Brings About Change

Spring is finally here. Well, technically it started a few weeks ago, but it hasn't really felt like spring in NYC until now. Spring is a time for new beginnings. As we crawl out from the chill of winter, and dust ourselves off we often feel renewed and ready to begin, or begin again.

I started 2017 with high hopes and encountered some challenging moments along the way. To get through these challenging couple of months, I turned to some inspiring reads. A few real life tales to put things into perspective and some philosophical and spiritual texts for guidance. I've found all of them helpful in different ways and thought I would share the books and some quotes for others who might be looking for a breath of fresh air.

1. The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion

"Everything's going along as usual and then all shit breaks lose."

2. When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön

"Letting there be room for not knowing is the most important thing of all."

"'This very moment is the perfect teacher, and it's always with us' is really a most profound instruction."

3. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

"'Because I don't live in either my past or my future. I'm interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present you will be a happy man. . . . Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we're living right now.'"

4. The Book of Joy by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu with Douglas Abrams

" A healthy perspective really is the foundation of joy and happiness, because they way we see the world is the way we experience the world. Changing the way we see the world in turn changes the way we feel and the way we act, which changes the world itself."
